The stretch of Sri Lanka's Southern Coast around Bentota and Induruwa is one of the most rewarding areas in the country — beautiful beaches, extraordinary wildlife, ancient history and some of the island's best food, all within an hour's drive. Here are the ten experiences we recommend most to our guests at Villa Estuary.

Induruwa's beach is quieter and more unspoilt than the more famous Bentota beach — the same golden sand and warm Indian Ocean water, but with a fraction of the crowds. Perfect for morning walks, afternoon swims and some of the most spectacular sunsets on the Southern Coast.

Watching hatchling turtles make their first journey to the Indian Ocean is one of those rare travel experiences that genuinely moves you. The Induruwa Sea Turtle Hatchery protects five endangered species and releases hatchlings most evenings during nesting season. Unmissable, especially for families with children.

A slow boat through the Bentota River mangroves is one of Sri Lanka's great travel experiences. Watch monitor lizards sun themselves on the banks, spot kingfishers and purple herons, visit the cinnamon island, and glide through narrow mangrove tunnels where the canopy closes overhead. We can arrange this directly — just ask.

Sri Lanka is one of the world's best places to see Blue Whales — the largest animals ever to have lived on Earth. The peak season runs from November to April when the southern seas are calm. Spinner Dolphins are present year-round and love to bow-ride alongside the boat. A truly extraordinary experience.

The UNESCO-listed Galle Fort is one of Asia's finest preserved colonial fortifications — a 17th-century Dutch walled city where cobblestone streets, boutique cafés, art galleries and ancient ramparts all coexist beautifully. Walk the walls at sunset for one of the great views in Sri Lanka.

Hikkaduwa's coral reef is one of the most accessible snorkelling spots in Sri Lanka — wade in from the beach and you're immediately surrounded by tropical fish and coral gardens. Glass-bottom boat tours are perfect for those who prefer to stay dry, including young children. Combine with lunch at one of the excellent seafood restaurants on the beach.

The estuary behind Villa Estuary is a genuine wildlife sanctuary. Egrets wade in the shallows at dawn, kingfishers dart between the mangrove roots, monitor lizards sun themselves on the banks, and playful macaque monkeys swing through the palms. Sit quietly with a coffee in the garden and the wildlife comes to you.

Borrow one of Villa Estuary's bicycles and explore the coastal villages at your own pace. The flat coastal road takes you through authentic fishing communities, past coconut groves, colourful temples and local spice stalls. Stop for a fresh coconut by the roadside and chat with the friendly local fishermen bringing in the morning catch.

Learn to cook an authentic Sri Lankan rice and curry spread from scratch — freshly scraped coconut, homemade pol sambol, slow-cooked dhal and a fragrant protein curry. Our cooking class runs every day, lasts 3 hours and ends with eating what you've cooked together in the garden. Open to villa guests and outside visitors.

One of Sri Lanka's oldest and most important turtle conservation projects, Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery has been protecting sea turtles since 1981. Slightly larger than the Induruwa hatchery, it offers a more in-depth look at the conservation work — including adult turtles being rehabilitated and extensive educational displays about the five species that nest on this coast.
From turtle hatchery visits to whale watching and river safaris — our team arranges every experience directly. Just ask on arrival or contact us before you come.
