Option 1 — By Train ⭐ Most recommended
The train from Colombo to Induruwa is one of the most scenic and enjoyable ways to travel in Sri Lanka. The Coastal Line runs south from Colombo Fort Station, hugging the Indian Ocean for much of the journey — the views from the train window are genuinely spectacular, especially in the late afternoon light.
What to know:
- Depart from Colombo Fort Station — central and easy to find
- Get off at Induruwa Station — a small, quiet stop on the Coastal Line
- Journey time: approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours
- Trains run regularly — roughly every 30–60 minutes throughout the day
- Second class reserved seat: around 400–600 LKR ($1.50–2 USD)
- First class (Intercity Express): around 800–1200 LKR ($3–4 USD)
💡 Train Tips
- Book reserved seats in advance online at eservices.railway.gov.lk — especially for weekends and peak season
- Sit on the left side of the train heading south for the best ocean views
- The Intercity Express is faster and more comfortable — worth the small extra cost
- Induruwa is a request stop on some services — tell the conductor your destination
- Villa Estuary can arrange a tuk-tuk to meet you at Induruwa Station
Option 2 — Private Taxi or Transfer
A private car or taxi is the most comfortable and convenient option, especially if you have luggage, are travelling as a family, or are arriving late. The Southern Expressway (E01) makes the drive fast and straightforward — you can be at Villa Estuary in as little as 1.5 hours in good traffic.
What to know:
- Cost: approximately $35–50 USD for a private car from Colombo or the airport
- From Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) — about 100km, roughly 2 hours
- Many drivers speak basic English and are helpful with directions
- Villa Estuary can arrange a trusted driver directly — ask us when you book
📱 Uber vs PickMe — Which App to Use?
Both apps work well in Colombo, but there's one important difference:
- Uber — works with your existing account, no local SIM required. Great if you haven't got a Sri Lankan number yet. Download before you travel.
- PickMe — Sri Lanka's local ride-hailing app, often cheaper and more available outside Colombo. However, it requires a local Sri Lankan phone number to register. Set it up once you have a local SIM.
- Our recommendation: use Uber on arrival, switch to PickMe once you have a local SIM card.
💡 Taxi Tips
- Always agree on the price before getting in if not using a metered app
- The Southern Expressway toll is usually included in the quoted price — confirm this
- Our villa can arrange airport pickup — contact us at info@villaestuary.com
- For the return journey, your driver can usually wait or we can arrange one for you
Option 3 — Public Bus
The public bus is the cheapest option and gives you a very authentic Sri Lankan travel experience. Buses run frequently from Colombo Bastian Mawatha Bus Terminal (near Colombo Fort) heading south along the coastal road.
What to know:
- Take any bus heading to Galle or Matara via the coastal road
- Tell the conductor you want Induruwa — they will call your stop
- Journey time: approximately 2–3 hours depending on traffic
- Cost: approximately 200–350 LKR ($0.70–1.20 USD)
- Buses can be crowded, especially during rush hours and weekends
- Air-conditioned express buses are available and more comfortable
💡 Bus Tips
- Travel light — overhead space is limited and bags can be awkward on busy buses
- Early morning departures are less crowded and cooler
- Keep small change ready — conductors prefer exact fare
- The coastal road views are beautiful even from the bus
Option 4 — Tuk-Tuk
Tuk-tuks are wonderful for shorter journeys within the Induruwa and Bentota area but are generally not practical for the full journey from Colombo — it is a long way and can be uncomfortable over 88km. However, if you are arriving from nearby Bentota, Hikkaduwa or Galle, a tuk-tuk is a perfectly good option and a fun way to travel the coastal road.

🚆 Train Safety — Please Read
Sri Lanka's coastal train is beautiful and we highly recommend the experience — but it is not comparable to train services in Western countries. Trains can be crowded, delayed, and the doors are often left open while moving. Please keep the following in mind:
- Keep your belongings with you at all times — keep bags close, especially in crowded carriages
- Do not lean out of open doors while the train is moving
- Book a reserved seat if possible — particularly during weekends and public holidays
- Travel safe, be aware of your surroundings, and enjoy the stunning coastal views responsibly
🛺 Road Crossing — Take Extra Care
Traffic in Sri Lanka can be unpredictable. Tuk-tuks, motorbikes and buses do not always follow lane discipline or give way to pedestrians. Always check thoroughly in both directions before crossing any road — even at marked crossings. Take your time, wait for a clear gap, and never assume a vehicle will stop.
