Sea Turtle Conservation

Just a short walk from Villa Estuary is the Induruwa Sea Turtle Hatchery — one of Sri Lanka's most important conservation centres. Watch hatchlings make their first incredible journey to the Indian Ocean. A deeply moving experience, especially for families with children, and one you will never forget.

The Hatchery

The Hatchery

The hatchery rescues sea turtle eggs from the beach and incubates them safely, protecting them from predators and poachers. Visitors can see turtles at various stages — from newly hatched babies to adult turtles being rehabilitated for release. Five species of turtle nest along this coast, including Loggerhead, Green, and Leatherback.

Watch Hatchlings Reach the Sea

Witnessing baby turtles making their first dash to the ocean is one of those rare travel memories that stays with you forever. Evening releases are particularly magical — the tiny turtles following the moonlight towards the waves. Our team can arrange evening visits for the best chance of witnessing a release.
